Works Great, The drive did everything I needed to do. I could make copies of and burn DVDs at the speed of light with this drive. I had a laptop and needed an external burner and found this to be one of the best deals on the market.
Works Great......, When it works. I have had consistent problems with this drive, using both firewire and USB. It often does not recognize dvd's that it has burned, and sometimes it will stop reading data halfway through. Also, when this happens, it will disappear from the computer, and you must turn off the drive, disconnect, turn back on the drive, and reconnect. Some firmware definitely needs to be worked on here.

When it DOES work, though, it is fast and effective.

Good drive, software so so, By A Customer
This is a good drive. Don't be fooled by another reviewer who had problems with it in Windows 98. If you are trying to use this with Windows 98, you probably don't have a fast enough computer to even begin to utilize this drive's potential.Drive is nice and portable.... I take this unit between home and work with no problem. The unit has its own power supply, which isn't always ideal, but seems to be the norm these days.The drive has good features. My only beef is that the included software is so-so. The "main" burning program is Iomega's own proprietary burning software. I tend to prefer industry standard/well known burners when it comes to DVD/CD creation (more features). Ghost 2003 is included, which is a definate plus for making bootable DVD backups of your system. Iomega also includes their own backup utility, but this simply isn't as good as Ghost. The Sonic DVD creation software is pretty basic. You can get more functionality out of Microsoft's free movie maker software, though.
Product works...., No problems so far -- having being using it for the past few months. Using Roxio Easy Media Creator instead of Iomega's software. Also received Ghost though I have not tested it out. Also unable to use DVD+RW. For some reason, these DVD are not readable on most DVD drives. Not sure if this is a Iomega drive issues. In any case, successfully used it with Win 2K and XP. (...), it is well worth it's price. Just 3 stars for "poor" propriety software package.
Too much product, not enough info., I purchaced this drive for two reasons. I needed an external writing drive for my laptop, and I wanted to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. As an external drive, it seems to be a solid, well-built(although slightly costly) drive. I was very disappointed at it's ability to transfer VHS to DVD though. After installing the software and reading the manual, I found out that I needed to buy an additional video capture card. The really big problem there is that most cards on the market transfer analog video on your internal drive, making the external writer completely unnecessary. My advice would be to only buy this as a primary writing drive, of which there are equally good and less expensive models out there. If I had to do it over, that would have been my course.
bad business, I tried this drive on Mac OSX, you would think get up & go as easy as mac is but ohno, the box says its for mac, the CD in the box is for windows & guess what ? this drive does not work on Mac osx or tiger. You turn it on & nothing, nothing mounts to the desktop & I mean nothing so what does one do in times like these ? Goes to show ya!!! buy from apple & you get what you pay for .. top quality. Buy from those trying to meet the mac system & its the worste buck spent for the day. Man I tell ya! windows is so lame.

Painful, By A Customer
I'm really trying to make it work with this burner. After hours and hours of attempted DVD-R burning with the 4x model and 10+ chat's with Iomega support, the support team realized the problem might be my drive. I received the 8x model as a replacement and am having similar problems burning. I know it is not a machine specific problem since a TDK external drive burns no problem. I would never wish the amount of time I have wasted troubleshooting and $$'s spent on failed DVD-R burns on anyone.

The avgerage Amazon.com rating was higher when I purchased this drive (so was the price). It turns out it works just fine with my Windows XP PC. I purchased Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.0 also which picks up the drive with no problems. The drive is also compatable with Mac OS 10.2.7 or newer using the CharisMac Discribe software.
WATCH OUT!!! BEWARE!!!, By A Customer
This device was a major bust!!! Will NOT properly transfer any format data,music,video from a Win98SE to blanks then to WinXP MC2004 computer. Crashes computer and the included CD/DVD software willNOT work properly. Sonic CinePlayer froze computer up and would not load. Installation software changed config.sys/ regedit/autoecec files to its own parameter and rendered my internal cr-rom drive inoperable. After 7 hours on non-toll free repair line with Iomega got that working but Sonic tech support could NOT fix freeze problem so I had to return it for full refund.

Great Drive, Fast Burn, Sleek Software, Nice Price, A Kid's Review
This drive is great! It worked perfect for me! It comes bundled with some great software that's easy to use. It says that it takes 30 minutes to install the drive and everything, but I had it up and and burning in 15! CD Extreme works great and lets you burn CD to CD, data CDs, Audio CDs, etc.
You get what you pay for, I bought this burner at Fry's for ... and am very pleased with it - very fast [takes less than 10 mins to burn ANY full CD] + it DOES support the 80 min CDs. The software's ... though - I recomend getting a Mp3 CD Burner and a Nero from Cnet. Overally, a ... fast, and reliable burner.
CD-Extreme freezes system, By A Customer
Drive installed easy, but running the provided CD-Extreme CD writer software freezes the system. I get several messages, then a 'Scanning buses' message followed by a freeze. Only power down gets you out of this problem. I removed by USB card, my sound card, 2nd SCSI card and old Memorex 2X CD-RW drive. Still had the same problem, even when this Sony drive was only IDE device on system. I uninstalled all the Sony provided software. I downloaded and installed a 10 day trial version of NTI CD-Maker 2000. That software ran fine and created CDs with no problem. But, I am not going to spend more money on software to get Sony hardware to work.
Sony CRX160E/A1, (What's this?) Though documentation makes no mention of Macintosh compatibility, this unit readily and flawlessly replaced the incredibly noisy CD-R in my B&W 350. I am pleased to have been able to make this useful upgrade to my machine with so little cost and effort.
GOOD DRIVE FOR THE MONEY AFTER REBATES, This is my second SONY CD-RW,the 1st was a CRX100,4x2x24.A good drive but slow.This drive is fast,I'm using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02,had to update to 4.03 before it would reconize the drive(Thanks to a earlier reveiw)the update is free at Roxio under software updates,one note is to be sure to set the plug in back for master or slave,I didn't,had to take it back out.The drive is quiet.So far so good,would buy it again.
Garbage, I won't boar you with the details of the week I spent in Sony Customer Service hell. Suffice it to say the drive was defective right out of the box, the documentation says it is Windows 2000 compliant (it isn't) and Sony offers no software update which is W2K compatible, only that they apologize for the mis-representation. Add to this their only remedy for the defective drive is to repair it in 20 to 30 days. So, I end up with a rebuilt drive (they specificaly said NO NEW replacements) after paying for a new one that does not meet the requirements of my operating system. Good Luck.
Really great CD-RW, this ATAPI/EIDE CD-RW writer is a little miracle in a mechanical box. This CD writer was factory installed in my pc when I bought it about three months ago.
It's a completely relable CD-RW. If I wanted to write a disc at the spur of the moment the writer was always willing and able. However there were a couple of times where I ended making coasters, but those were my stupid mistakes.
But for the CD writer novices out there. feel confident about this CD-RW, It will win your acclaim.
Dissapointed in Sony!, I am dissapointed in Sony! Usually you can't go wrong. However,the drive just doesn't do what it claims. It will not write fasterthan 8x when burning files and 4x when going from CD toCD. Bufferunderruns are the norm and not the exception. When it didrun it was real noisy. I tried callingSony.................................................I waited longerthan this, and they hung up on me after 35 minutes waiting to talkwith them. This happened three times. That was enough. You have tostand behind your product...
Great Drive; Half-Great Software, The drive looks great, was easy to install, and its fast.The non-required burning software isn't bad, but I've seen better. It is very easy to use but dosen't allow you to burn a CD to CD copy at full speed with out making a temporary disk image. A great feature of the software allows you to go from MP3 tracks to an audio CD, some other software only allows you to go from WAV to an audio cd. The data cd feature is great.

Deceptive advertising., This product claims to play DVD's but what iomega fails to tell you is that no DVD software is included. You have to spend a long time on the ichat customer support site only to discover you have to pay more money for the DVD software. The more I use iomega products the more I am frustrated with their quality and customer service.

I love Iomgea products. However, I could not get this to work with my network computer and after having several 1 on 1 live online chats with their so called tech. support I could not get anywhere with it. And after e-mailing them several times the response I received was a number to try which of course was not toll free. I ended up just sending this back to Amazon.com but, I was really hoping they could tell me what was wrong with it because I would love to have an external CD-RW/DVD-ROM on my network computer.

Plus no DVD software.I wish I wasn't so cheap and had been willing to shell out the bucks for a Que Firewire drive.
